Innovative companies do much better in times of crisis

In an article published this week (in German only), Bernhard Dachs from the Austrian Institute for Technology and Bettina Peters from the Zentrum fur Europaische Wirtschaft (ZEW) make the case for investing in innovation as a means for recovery. Past crises show that pro-cyclical companies tend to reduce their R&D during a recession. Main reasons are uncertainties for the future and a doubt whether new and innovative products will be in demand during and just after a crisis. Research and Innovation actors from the public, private and academic sectors represented by the Knowledge4Innovation Forum in the European Parliament, addressed a letter to the European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, emphasizing the important role of research & innovation to solve major problems not only in the recovery plan but in the EU’s long-term strategy. Innovation to be central in EU recovery plan

The K4I Governing Board meeting showed large agreement on the central role of innovation in the recovery pan of the EU. Not only can innovation push faster and better recovery of the hard companies, but the crisis also offers an opportunity to accelerate the policy agenda’s of the Green Deal and the Digital Transformation. In the meeting chaired by Ms Maria da Graça CARVALHO several aspects of the recovery plan were discussed.
